I've suggested that I think John was in the wilderness to prepare himself for his service to God. As we shall soon see, his stern call for repentance has a hardness he learned in the desert. Still, what is the end result of being in the wilderness for John? Was he resigned to his task? Or was he ready and raring to go? From his youth, John was set aside for a purpose and now the time had come. After waiting, learning, praying, John was about to fulfill the purpose God had ordained for him since before he was in his mother's womb.

to walk worthily of the Lord, pleasing him in all respects
