She walks in beauty, like the night...

I am hoping to return to posting things intellectual soon. But I'll write this heart thing down: have you ever felt like you were just beginning to love? That all your efforts at it before were paltry and that even now you are only capable of feeble attempts, but you sense perhaps that your are beginning to move in the right direction? Love, I think, means not thinking of yourself but of the one you love. Is it self-centered to say I have moments of being selfless? They are brief and are often eclipsed by stunning moments of egregious selfishness, but still they are there.

Thought I'd share this in response to your altruistic love realization or reminder as it were, by the way, is it wrong for me to connect everything with Lewis? If so I blame you, most humble professor, for instilling that man's ideologies in my brain. Hope all is going well for you in Malibu, life isn't so bad here in Rochester.

Now Eros makes a man really want, not a woman, but one particular woman. In some mysterious but quite indisputable fashion the lover desires the Beloved herself, not the pleasure she can give. No lover in the world ever sought the embraces of the woman he loved as a result of a calculation, however unconscious, that they would be more pleasurable than those of any other woman...in Eros, a Need, at it's most intense, sees the object most intensely as a thing admirable in herself, important far beyond her relation to the lover's need.
