Gallup has a self-assesment tool known as Strengths Quest, which my college is adopting as an instrument for helping students make the most of their academic career. Anyway, according to the tool, my strengths are: Input, Learner, Intellection, Context, and Connectedness. When you delve into these you find that basically I am doomed to only one career, namely the one I am in. Now, I like my career (it's my calling, you know), but I would like to have a marketable trade as well. My neighbors are an electrician, a child-care provider, a heating and cooling service technician, and a mechanical engineer. They are very nice and do a lot for each other and for us. Wouldn't it be cool to return the favor? But they never seem to want a discourse on anicent Jewish exegesis or religious syncretism in Asia Minor or the role of the Barbelo in the Sethian treatise Apocryphon of John. Of course, it would be kind of cool to say something like "Bill, if you help me rewire the chicken coup I can help you translate that difficult Philo of Alexandria passage you were reading" - without having to worry about Bill calling his hunting dogs.

I think I understand why you would feel the way you do, though; perhaps I haven't been in exactly the same place yet in my life.
But I do want to reaffirm the fact that the job you do is indeed, so important. And it is a good job. In my short time working for RC I have heard SO many times what an amazing professor you are.
Hopefully someday I will sit-in or take one of your classes myself.
