Lent, Day 19: Anyone who chooses to become a friend with the world becomes an enemy of God

In Luke's Gospel, John calls all who come to see him a "brood of vipers" (in Matthew's, he only says this to the Pharisees). The difficulty with John's preaching and with Lent is that it forces us to see ourselves in a harsh light; even more difficult is that light is generally truthful. Repentance means accepting that we aren't who we should be doing what we should be doing.
