Lent, Day 20: he who keeps you will not slumber.

Getty Illuminated Manuscripts

Psalm 121 speaks of the Lord who is ever vigilant, "he who keeps Israel will neither slumber or sleep," and how he intervenes to keep pilgrims safe on this journey and every journey, "the Lord will keep your going out and coming in from this time on and forevermore."

We begin our pilgrimage in a quest for peace amidst people who are not always peaceful (Ps 120). Given this, it is a boon to have on our side one who attends to us at all times, guarding us from others and from ourselves, especially in that he is all powerful ("My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.")

Let us draw close to him, for he is faithful and he will receive us in love and mercy.
